10/18/2015: Tinne (Tin-nay), or Holly

Tinne (Tin-nay), or Holly Ogham

Samhain is right around the corner. The veil is very thin at this time of the year. This can be very taxing on people emotionally, energetically, spiritually, mentally, etc. With lots of visitors, living and otherwise, it’s really important to keep yourself protected. Welcome, Tinne. Tinne is all about protection. Use Tinne in meditation to gain focus and clarity about all that is around you to keep you safe. Keep a small piece of holly or a picture of the ogham Tinne in your pocket as you move about your day. Traditionally, wands of holly were used to ward off mischievous spirits. Second only to it’s twin Duir (oak), Tinne looks over us during the dark half of the year.

During this time it is also important to remember to take care of yourself. Sage yourself and your home; clear away any energies you don’t need anymore. It’s also important to remember that when you clear a space to fill it with loving energy.

Be mindful of who you allow in your home. This goes for any time of the year, but boundaries are very important during Samhain because of the wandering energies. Set very clear intentions of who is allowed in and when. This includes living friends and family as well.

Scents are easy to use within the home. As a quick reminder: research any essential oils you may use. Not all are safe to use if you have high/low blood pressure, anxiety, are pregnant, etc.  Scents such as dragon’s blood, sage, basil, black pepper, pine, peppermint, and many others are great to use for protection. Many are also easily incorporated into cooking!

Stones such as hematite have long been a favorite for protection. Hematite is wonderful for absorbing energies similarly to a sponge. Clear stones such as quartz are good for programming with specific intent. Another favorite of mine is hawk’s eye (aka blue tiger’s eye) for repelling the negative energy of others.

Lastly, listen to your body. It will tell you when something isn’t right. Have a safe and enjoyable Samhain!
