Ashwagandha & Shatavari
…a Great Valentines Day Treat
Two of my favorite Ayurvedic Herbs, especially for this time of year, are Ashwagandha and Shatavari. Often times, Ashwagandha is thought of as being an herb for males and Shatavari as being an herb for females.
Ashwagandha translates into “Vitality of a Horse” and is thought of giving a man the ability to be a stallion, while Shatavari translates to “she who has a 1,000 husbands” or more realistically as “to have the energy to have 1,000 husbands”… though both are great herbs for both sexes.
Ashwagandha helps to reduce both Vata and Kapha (helps to clear the mind, relax the nerves as well as decreasing fat, and brings vitality while also helping to regenerate the self). It is a fantastic immune-boosting herb, helps people who are over-worked and burnt-out, and
increases nitric oxide (something many body builders take to increase muscle mass and endurance – and is also found to have positive effects on the male genital region), as well as a host of many other things.
Shatavari, which is the roots of wild Indian asparagus, is also another great immune boosting herb which helps to build strength, great for the female (and male) organs, helps in issues of infertility, increases breast milk and semen, cleanses the blood… just to name a few benefits. It is a Vata and Pitta reducing herb, but in large doses can increase Kapha as it helps to nurture the mucous membranes of the body. It is also said to increase the feeling of Love & Devotion 😉
Try this nice drink this February. It is best to drink this several days in a row in the evening for best results:
- 1 cup Whole Milk
- 1/4 tsp Ashwagandha
- 1/4 tsp Shatavari
- 1 Tbspn Raw Unheated Honey
Directions: Heat Milk, Ashwagandha and Shatavari in a pot on Medium/Medium-Low Heat until hot. Place the Raw Unheated Honey into a cup, then pour the heated mixture into the cup. Stir, sip and enjoy!
Variation: You could also add 1/8 tsp of Cinnamon, a pinch of Clove and 1/2 tsp of Cacao if you’d like as well.
*Note: the Raw Unheated Honey helps to move any stuck, excess mucous…. also Honey should never be directly heated.
